What Does a Violin + Cello Duo Play at a Wedding?

We start with prelude music as your guests arrive, so they settle in smiling. Then we play your entrance, the signing of the register and your exit as a married couple.

Pachelbel's Canon and Bach's Prelude and Ave Maria sit happily beside Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" and Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely". We play from a library of almost 1,000 arrangements of today's biggest songs, written exclusively by us. You won't hear them played this way anywhere else.

Is a String Duo Enough for a Wedding?

Yes, for up to about 50 guests. Two instruments, unplugged, carry beautifully in a chapel, a garden corner, a restaurant or a small function room.

Bigger guest list? Add players, not a speaker. The biggest leap in sound is from a duo to a trio. With two violins, the melody and harmonies soar together over the beautiful bass notes of the cello. The quartet adds a viola, filling the middle with an even deeper, richer warmth.

Can a String Duo Play the Cocktail Hour Too?

Yes, and it's one of the loveliest things a duo does. Once you're married, we keep playing while your guests grab a drink and a canapé and you slip away for photos. People love hearing their favourite songs on strings, glass in hand.

Two of us is just right for this. It's light enough to talk over, and familiar enough that guests smile when a song they know begins. We play everything live, with no recorded playlist.

Who we are

Who Are the Musicians?

We're degree-qualified string players, and many of us trained at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where Red Soda began as a group of friends. Some of us have played with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and we've played 2,000+ Sydney weddings since 2009.

We play weddings every weekend, so we know how a ceremony flows and exactly when your song needs to begin. And we've never missed a wedding we were booked for.

How much does a violin and cello duo cost for a wedding?

A Violin + Cello Duo starts from $770 in Sydney. Travel within 30 km of Sydney is included. Venues further out are priced by distance in the Package Builder, and adding reception music brings a package discount automatically. All prices include GST.

How many guests is a string duo good for?

Up to about 50 guests. Two instruments carry beautifully, unplugged, in a smaller room. For up to about 80 guests, choose a String Trio, where a second violin adds harmony over the melody. For 80 to 100 guests or more, choose a String Quartet, our fullest strings sound.

Does a string duo need a sound system or power?

No. We play unplugged, so there's nothing to plug in and no speakers to hide. We arrive up to 20 minutes before your booking starts, so we're set up and tuned before the first guest sits down. All we need is a covered spot and two chairs.

Can we choose our own songs?

Yes. You choose every song from our library of almost 1,000 arrangements, written exclusively by us, with classical pieces sitting alongside the latest pop songs. Song choices are due 8 weeks before the wedding. If your song isn't on the list, ask your Band Manager about it.

When does the duo play during the ceremony?

We play prelude music as guests arrive, then your entrance, the signing of the register and your exit. Prelude is where the tone is set, so give it time in your schedule. Many couples keep us on into drinks and canapés while they slip away for photos.

Can the duo play at an outdoor ceremony?

Yes, and live strings in a garden are a beautiful thing. Our instruments can't play in rain or harsh Aussie sun, so give us a covered, shaded spot and a wet-weather backup. Let your Band Manager know where we'll be set up.

Do you travel outside the city?

Yes. We travel right across NSW, including the Hunter Valley, Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains and South Coast, so a country ceremony can have the same live strings as a city one. Two of us fit a vineyard lawn or a tiny country chapel just as easily as a city garden, and we play unplugged, so there's nothing to set up but two chairs. Ferries and accommodation are extra, and your Band Manager tells you before you book.
