Wedding Attire Trends This Summer

Wedding guests typically fall into two categories: Those who recycle the same outfit for every wedding—regardless of venue or season—and those who feel the need to buy a new outfit for every single set of “I Dos”.

Regardless of what category you fall into, wedding season is upon us, which means it’s probably time to invest in a fresh set of threads. If you’re wondering what to wear to either a formal and informal wedding this summer.

An ocean of inspiration

Pantone’s annual Color of the Year is always a good indicator of what to expect at festivities, from tabletop color schemes to bridal party hues. That’s why you’re likely to see a sea of “Living Coral”, Pantone’s Color of the Year, as part of wedding guests’ attire this summer. A shade somewhere between pink and orange, Living Coral is punchy, sweet, and modern, and works well for both men and women.

The magic of Markle

That would be “Markle”, as in Meghan Markle, of course. Looking forward to the Royal Wedding, designers last year created plenty looks fit for royalty, with ornate beadwork, crystals and tiaras.

Unfortunately, brides may have to wait until next season to buy dresses that look similar to what Markle actually wore (the bridal market operates a full year in advance)—but luckily, guests will have plenty of Duchess-inspired options. Look for minimal dresses with clean lines. Playsuits and pantsuits (Markle’s go-to outfit of choice) will also remain popular for outdoor weddings, as an alternative to summer dresses.

Taking the longer route

Full sleeves having been making the rounds at as attire at summer weddings throughout the UK and Canada. Canada’s take on this trend is long-sleeved mini-dresses in breezy fabrics such as shirred silk, keeping you both classy and cool. Designer Alice McCall, for one, has plenty of sweet little numbers on offer.

The bright, bold and the beautiful

According to Brides Magazine, “bold” and “bright” is your best bet for menswear this summer, with vibrant suits in colors such as purple, burgundy or ink blue brightening up wedding parties and reception halls alike.

Let yourself get ruffled up

Whether they were a one-tier affair or elaborate layers worthy of a wedding cake, ruffles were a prominent feature in the collection of almost every noteworthy Canadian designer this spring. Given how romantic the look is, we can’t think of what better dress to wear to a summer wedding than a ruffled one.

Kaftans, kaftans, kaftans

Not just for the beach or festivals, kaftans have become a favorite amongst celebrities—Hilary Clinton even traded in her trademark pantsuit to wear to a wedding in 2017. Simultaneously forgiving and fierce, there’s no doubt about it—these tunic dresses are having a moment. Not surprisingly, bohemian Byron Bay label Spell & The Gypsy Collective are a go-to source for this trend.

Shouldering the burden of effortless style

Dresses that display bare shoulders have been synonymous with outdoor summer weddings for as long as we can remember, but how we display them has changed. This year, it’s all about one-shoulder and off-the-shoulders looks for brides and guests alike. The best accessory to this look? A wide hat and plenty of sunscreen.
